NUTN held a series of events “2020 International Cultural Week” encouraging students to expand international perspective
In order to cooperate with The Ministry of Education, Higher Education Sprout Project, and to help the build of mutual understandings and respect between local and foreign students, NUTN integrates multiculturalism into the campus learning environment. From November 16th to 20th, The“2020 international cultural week” series of events kicked off, which expanded students’ international perspective. In addition to “Posters exhibition of the results of seven cultures and second language courses”and “On-campus multicultural English writing contest”, “Alliance Francaise”and “Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association, Kaohsiung Office” were also invited to give lectures about French and Japanese cultures.
The aim of this series of events is to elevate students’ international comprehensive and communication ability, increasing opportunities for exchanges between different countries and cultures. Office of International Affairs held two multicultural lectures, providing students with the chance to have a deeper understanding of Japanese and French cultural perspective. The first lecture, “Cultural differences between Taiwan and France” will be held on November 18th, Marie Muller (Deputy director of Alliance Francaise) was invited to share her experience. The second lecture was held on November 20th, Teacher Yuko Sakamoto (Japanese language specialist from Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association, Kaohsiung Office) was invited to share experiences about the topic, “Small techniques for communicating with Japanese people”. An On-campus multicultural English writing contest was held in the international week series of events, as well, using the topic, “Issues related to multiculturalism “as main focus, aiming on bringing up students’ English writing ability and showing the results of English learning. Through the discussion of global issues, making students to understand more about views from different cultures, which elevated students’ critical thinking and the ability of practice.
Chia-Sheng Hu (Dean of Office of International Affairs, NUTN) indicated, this series of events helped students to expand their cognitive differences of foreign cultures, and further thinking and go deeper into other cultures and customs, which brought up students’ communication and understandings of diversity and enhanced global multicultural cognition and knowledge. Yan-Chang Huang (Director of Language Center, Office of International Affairs, NUTN) said, ‘’Thanks to the series of events, the interaction between local and foreign students has increased remarkably, opening up local students’ vision, inspiring students to show various creative thinking, and hence sharing the results of the globalization of NUTN’’. In addition to the richness of series of events, students learned knowledge and skills differ from ones that learned from daily classes, taking the opportunities to observe the worldview of different countries, expanded horizons, and so as to apply all to future plans and in the workplace.
